After the decision of Soda companies to change the sweetener in Diet Sodas from Aspartame to Sucralose in USA, we felt a need to detail some information about artificial sweeteners.
Artificial sweeteners have endured a lot of controversy over the years. We’ve been told they cause cancer, Type 2 diabetes, obesity, digestive problems and more. Yet credible organizations, such as the National Cancer Institute, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and American Heart Association are not telling us to stop using them.
The four most common artificial sweeteners approved by the FDA are acesulfame potassium, aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose. Stevia is considered a novel sweetener and is generally recognized as safe by the FDA.
Health experts and studies recommend to give-up diet soda for the following reasons:
1- Artificial sweeteners confuse your body.
Artificial sweeteners have more intense flavor than real sugar, so overtime your senses will dull towards sweet food like fruits.
2- Artificial Sweeteners will lead to weight gain.
Diet soda is calorie-free, but it won’t necessarily help you lose weight. Researchers from the University of Texas found that over the course of about a decade, diet soda drinkers had a 70% greater increase in waist circumference compared with non-drinkers.
The way artificial sweeteners confuse the body may play a part, but another reason might be psychological, because people count diet soda as zero calorie and they justify eating more and this also lead to weight gain.
3- Artificial sweeteners are associated with metabolic diseases and diabetes.
Drinking one diet soda a day was associated with a 36% increased risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes in a University of Minnesota study. Metabolic syndrome describes a cluster of conditions (including high blood pressure, elevated glucose levels, raised cholesterol, and large waist circumference) that put people at high risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
4- Artificial sweeteners have no nutritional benefits.
5- Artificial sweeteners & ٍSoda destroy the tooth enamel.
6- Soda may cause depression
A recent study presented at a the American Academy of Neurology meeting found that over the course of 10 years, people who drank more than four cups or cans of soda a day were 30% more likely to develop depression than those who steered clear of sugary drinks.
7-Soda may cause osteoporosis (bad to your bones)
A study found that female who drink soda had nearly 4% lower bone mineral density in their hips than women who didn’t drink soda.
Please note that sugary soda is also not recommended if you are seeking a healthy lifestyle, but our article was on artificial sweeteners.
